First, what is osteoarthritis?

Also called degenerative joint disease is the deterioration of cartilage which causes inflammation of the joints. Age, repetitive stress, injury and disease can cause this deterioration. Dog arthritis can happen to any dog but is more common in older dogs and larger breeds.

Activity aversion

A once active dog may  have stiffness, lameness or difficulty standing which can be dog joint pain symptoms. They may have less interest going for walks or doing other activities such as chasing a ball.

Irritability and vocalization

A once happy and playful dog can start to wine and be irritable which are canine arthritis symptoms caused by pain.

Posture and mobility changes

Joint swelling in dogs can cause changes in your dog’s posture and their gate. They may limp and shake when they walk or have trouble posturing to go to the bathroom.

Touch avoidance

Dog arthritis swelling can cause your dog to not want to be touched. You may also find them licking an elbow for example if it hurts.

Old dog arthritis symptoms can cause your dog more problems as they age which is no fun. However, there are ways to minimize the pain and discomfort. Examples include maintaining a proper weight, appropriate exercise, CBD for dogs and dog glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM which can all help with pain, swelling and mobility. To properly treat osteoarthritis in dogs set-up an appointment with your veterinarian. They will be able to give you all the options for treatment including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for severe cases .
