Veterinarian costs vary for several reasons. Costs vary depending on where you live, how much the employees are paid, but this is not all. One of the main reasons is the type of vet you go to.
What are the different types of veterinarians?
There are veterinarians that specialize in domestic animals such as dogs and cats and others that specialize in farm animals. This is not what we are referring to. The largest cost difference is if you take your pet to an emergency veterinarian versus a regular veterinarian.
An emergency veterinarian is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year. They also have larger staff and equipment to handle every possible need for animals. This is reflected in your veterinarian bills. We are talking about paying as much as double for anything, including an annual checkup!
Do your research when choosing a vet. Read reviews online and ask for referrals. Only go to an emergency vet if your pet has an emergency and your regular vet is closed. For example, there is no need to pay twice as much if your dog needs some teeth pulled when any veterinarian can handle this.
But again do your research and choose a veterinarian with a good reputation and that you feel comfortable with. Just like you would when choosing your own doctor. If you don’t already have pet health insurance it would be beneficial to research. Especially if your pet is older. This is when veterinarian bills can start to really add up.
